Hurvin Anderson

I am a big fan of Peter Doig. When I was looking at Doig’s work recently while checking out Michael Werner gallery, I came across another artist by the name of Hurvin Anderson.

Maybe its because I have been looking at the color washes favored by Doig so intensely recently, the colors and paint application associated with ‘Palace’ by Anderson took my breath away when I saw it for the first time. I really appreciate the mark making and complexity that was formed by allowing the unplanned happy accidents occurring with the bleeding washes here.

As a viewer, I see a concrete like bunker/house and overgrown vegetation. The shapes are as abstract as a good Diebenkorn. This painting is very well done.
