Gabriele Munter

I recently discovered the artist Gabriele Münter, and I'm particularly struck by her work, "Breakfast of the Birds."

Munter - Breakfast of the Birds

There is so much I appreciate about this painting:

  • I like how Münter positions the subject—whether it's herself or a figure—with her back to the viewer.

  • The scene shows a simple breakfast laid out in what appears to be a very comforting home, contrasting with the birds sitting outside on a snowy day.

  • I also admire the colors, brushwork, and compositional space.

I plan to read more about Münter, as I'm not immediately finding a large selection of her work. I did notice that some of her landscapes veer toward the style of one of my favorite artists, Marsden Hartley, although I have a feeling that they were not influencing each other, the two did meet when Hartley visited Munich in 1913. Hartley spent time with Kandinsky who lived with Munter the two took part in at least one group show (the First German Autumn Salon in 1913).

Here is a link to a very short profile on her: https://nmwa.org/art/artists/gabriele-munter/
