Marsden Hartley
When I was a kid, there were new and used bookstores all over every city and town. Each of those stores were landmarks, each of them offering knowledge. its kind of sad that they are mostly all gone. There are still a couple of outliers like Powells books in Portland a great old space that takes up an entire city block. One of the things I liked to do was rummage their huge shelf of art books. My introduction to Hartley was when I first saw this picture of a New Mexico Landscape on the cover of a Hartley New Mexico landscape catalog.

There are a few artists I hold up as pinnacle examples of the space they are working on. In my mind Diebenkorn and his exploration of the figure with his conetemporaries working in the abstract/color field painting time.,.. waht he did was increadible.
