What Happened to Edward Higgins

Discovering Edward Higgins

I’ve been listening to old campus lectures on the art world and recently came across a talk about the early Leo Castelli years. The lecturer showed a photograph of Castelli surrounded by works by Frank Stella, Jasper Johns, Lee Bontecou, Robert Rauschenberg. It is one of the great flex photos ever taken of a gallerist. There was also one odd form sitting on the floor in the foreground I couldn’t place.

Castelli in his gallery

The caption with the picture said this sculpture was by a guy named Edward Higgins. I looked up Higgins and found a rough review in Art Forum of his one and only solo show at Castelli. It looks like Higgins was involved in a few other group shows at the Castelli gallery as well. And that is about all I found.

Higgins had a show at one of the most important galleries ever. He was met with little interest, and then he vanished.

You can find the work of Higgins online easily enough, but only these few pieces from the time period around his show with Castelli. What happened to this guy? The aesthetic he conveys with his pieces is engaging. I want to see more!!!

The Other Edward Higgins

While looking for more details on the sculptor Higgins, your going to run across this other Edward Higgins who just passed a couple of years ago. I think you can see the reason why this art stopped me in my tracks.
