Office Study - Based on Degas
There is so much to appreciate about Degas. I remember spending a day at the Met once and how my mind kept coming back this piece afterwards. I’ve thought about why I like it: What the heck is going on here? The guy sulking is great. It looks like he’s in the middle of a Douglas Sirk film at the edge of a long fall from grace. Then that lady, its like she is pausing for a selfie.
The melodrama here is so sophisticated for its time. I want to steal from this and do something more with it even today.
Sulking - c.1870, oil on canvas 32.4 x 46.4 cm.
I think I did a few things well… missed on a few others. Things I like include the interpersonal drama… they are obviously familiar with each other, but what is the dynamic between the two? I still am not sure about that. hmmm… maybe its kind of flat?
Note: I added a painting in the background that was based on another piece I was working on.
Unfinished work (paper was falling apart on me).
Conclusion:
I like what I did. Its not great. I was having fun and learning.
