Jesus’ Epiphany
This was an unsuccessful painting from graduate school.
Looking back on in now, I can see that I am struggling with the same ideas I was considering back then.
What I see now is the cut scrap from a Currin painting that I was collaging into this work. I was thinking a lot about Currin in those days. I think with this action I was acknowledging that I appreciated what he was doing with his work. I took the scrap from what is still my favorite Currin painting ‘‘…
I think the Currin painting is heavily influenced (even if unintended) by cigarette ads in the 1980 magazines. '
I was mostly interested in taking this Kent cigarette ad, trying to render it in a painterly fashion, mash it in with the currin, and then ad a half assed unmeasured twist at the end by including jesus in the mix and trying to make him look sad because he’s realizing hes drinking his own blood and the ladies are laughing at him.
I am gooing to come back and clean this up… lol. Reminder to self: DONT FORGET!
