Florian Krewer

While revisiting the work of Hurvin Anderson and Peter Doig at Michael Werner Gallery—two artists I am currently following closely—I’ve also found myself drawn to Florian Krewer. Although I find his work hit-or-miss, his successful pieces are deeply compelling. What resonates most is his palette and his embrace of subconscious figuration. I am particularly interested in the raw, seemingly unstudied way he populates the canvas; when Krewer masters this 'naive' approach, the paintings achieve a rare synergy. This style also facilitates a beautiful, expressive quality in his mark-making and paint application.
