Félix Edouard Vallotton
I wanted to write a few words about Vallotton. This is a painter I’m getting to know. It kills me that Vallotton painted the above self portrait at the age of 20 in 1885. The work is so full of self confidence. The color pallette and understanding of paint is mature. And his ability to embue a painting with emotion and a sense of being is obvious.

This is a quicker study. Because its not so developed, its easier to see how thoughtfully he positions a composition. The abstract shape of the road and is that a fence?
Box Seats at the Theater - 1909
The harsh cropping of the composition here is beyond words. The yellow and dark grey black… how we are looking at the figures from down below. So unusual.

The Ocean
For some reason, I keep thinking that Vallotton’s sensibility and color pallet with most of his sunset ocean paintings are very reminiscent of the 1970s.
