I’m just starting to learn about Lockheart. I’m going to think about his work for a while, then will write more.
Initially, I am very taken by his colors and compositions. On his instagram feed, he shows a lot of details of his work. On one hand, I want to say to Lockheart (you use the detail shots to show remarkable craftsmanship). On the other hand I want to say to Lockheart (ouch…). I know a lot of people think fast painting with just what is necessary is what makes for a good painting. I disagree. I want to see craftsmanship and see evidence of someone thinking about their work for a long period of time. Lockhearts mark making details show as thin layers on blank canvas. To me this makes his work feel like its less than it could be… I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong. I love some of the work below. I’d love to see it in person.
