Gustave Caillebotte
I distinctly remember the first time I saw Caillebotte’s work. I remember how hard it was to find any literature on him. What I did find lumped him in with the Impressionists as a secondary player. I find it encouraging that over time Caillebotte has gained the wider recognition he deserves.
His compositions are striking. He was a proponent of photography. I think he used the photograph to frame his compositions and then worked from those. This isn’t a bad thing, Manet and Degas were doing a bit of this as well. And their compositions were also exploding what the idea of a composition could be.
What shocks me the most about Caillebotte is he created a lot more art than I originally thought. I am currently digging into his catalog raissonne and will update this page soon.
