Lois Dodd

Dodd attended the second rate institution Cooper Union in NYC just after WW2. She formed an important Woman’s co-op gallery in the 1950s called the Tanager Gallery and taught at Brooklyn College until 1992.

Dodd will turn 100 in 2027 and has been in my opinion, producing her finest work over the last couple of decades.

Dodd was part of a group of artists that worked and lived in both New York city and New England. I think, if I look at the work of Porter, Dodd, Katz, and a few other figurative artists during this time, I can imagine the influence they were having on one another because their styles kind of overlapped.

Architectural Elements:

In many of her works, Dodd will severely crop something out of the picture. I say severely because usually its something you expect to see fully in the painting as part of the composition. Its most obvious when there is a man made element.
