Vilhelm Hammershøi

other than Morandi and Vermeer, Vilhelm Hammershøi is probably the quietest artist I know of.

Den Hvide Dør (The White Door), 1888

This is perfection in my mind. The colors here are so sophisticated and subtle. The mark making is understated, yet pulls the eye across the canvas in a way you’re not even aware of unless you study it. The psychological side to this work is great with the empty glowing room, the open door, the brightly lit hallway… there is a lot there for a Jungian analyst.

Landscapes

I feel like Hammershoi started with a bang. He created several great masterpieces that leave me in awe.

As Hammershoi aged, his work became tighter. Technically, his work is a lot stronger, but I am feeling the loss of the in your face brushwork that can be found in his earlier works.
