Ooftah… this one was a beast to finish. I had some ideas to start with of having a mountain or a large hill in the distance, covered with trees and the viewer would be in the position of looking across a valley towards that mountain.
At this time I had started 4 or 5 works that were trying to incorporate the viewer being in a position over looking a valley. None of them worked. I think it is because i was trying to make this space up from scratch and what I was wanting was too complex for my feeble mind.
At a few points along the way, I felt like I nailed it. But then you add a few marks here and a few marks there… and suddenly your 100 miles from being in a good spot. So the picture kept morphing.
What I learned is that I should always have a composition in hand prior to sitting down and undertaking a more involved work. If you’re interested in seeing an even more frustrating work, check out the hurdles I have gone through with this ‘Etude’ study. I actually kind of like the process. I like that I went through all of these steps. I like that I documented it. Work like this, as frustrating as it is to create, is the foundational meaning of the word ‘art’ for me. Art is such a broad term, basically anything can be art or an artform. When I say ‘art’, I mean a documented act of learning while creating something new. That documentation could be a dinner made by a chef who was trying something new or a song played in a park to an audience, something that is here and gone. What you see below might not be a great work of art, but it is art at the very foundation of the meaning of the word for me in that I was learning every step of the way.
