Etude #2
Objective:
Goal: Focus is on color and mark making.
Result: WIP
Goal: Have a woman with a soul represented.
Result: WIP… It was difficult to hone in on who this person was. Starting without a reference allowed for so many different possibilities it was over whelming.
Picabia - Suzzane Romaine 1943
I am very keen on this series of paintings by Picabia all of which feature warped yet elegant depictions of Suzzane who I think was his mistress.
Emil Nolde - Frauenkopf, 1925-30
This painting by Nolde resonates at a specific frequency that one can admire for its raw in your face power, color, and mark-making.
I’m adding this image because I find it interesting to see when someone feels like they are done with a painting.
End of Stage 8
I really kind of liked the face at this stage. I lost it while trying to update the figure.
Restraint is important. A few small marks of paint and you have a completely different person looking back at you.
End of Stage 21
I feel like this is what the composition should be. It took a while without a photo reference to land here.
Next step is the surrounding space… what is it? And, don’t destroy the face again.
