The Act of Feeling the Wind
Feeling the Wind
I’ve been trying to capture this distillation of a human for a while. By that, I mean I want to expose a psychological affect without depicting a person per se. I don’t think I’m quite there yet, but it’s something I’ve been thinking about.
While I was working on this, I kept thinking that I wanted the figure to be like a raw nerve being touched by the wind. What would that feel like? What if you were nothing but a raw nerve, being caressed by a gentle breeze?
Picking Up Again
I believe I did this back in 2019. I thought it was okay at the time, but it wasn’t something I was particularly excited about. So I figured I might as well pick it up again and see where I could take it.
Ripple Sole #1 - Havard Homstvedt -2011
This is a work by (Håvard Homstvedt). Every once in a while, I like to see what he’s doing.
Feeling the Wind was my reaction to this work.
End of Session #7
I’m going to stop here. I don’t think the paper is holding up much longer. I’m starting to tear into it.
I’m actually very happy with this direction.
I don’t think this is an end state. I want to do a couple more and see if I can push the idea further.
Initial Judgement:
Picture Making / Craft:
This was clunky.Design Composition:
Not a primary objective. I think it’s actually kind of working, though.Concept/Brand:
I think this is a good secondary piece, something that would only really work if the brand has some authority behind it. If ELGIN eventually has some weight of its own, this piece will take on a deeper meaning. Without that context, though, I think it could fail to communicate much of anything.Concept/Indexing:
I wrote in detail about the meta data text here, ‘Objets Et Etranges #1’.Concept/Psychology:
This is something I made up as I was working on it. I was trying to understand what I was actually trying to draw.I knew what I was responding to (a work by Håvard). But I wanted to understand the more basic question: What am I drawing?
I don’t think I fully succeeded in answering that question, but I like where my mind ended up.
I came to the conclusion that I was trying to capture the feeling of having a raw nerve exposed by a cracked tooth while simultaneously biting down on an ice cube. Or, in this case, a raw nerve being caressed by a slight breeze.

A lot of good ambient beat songs on this record in my opinion.
