THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESSS!!!!

WORK IN PROGRESS

Crawford ‘Ice Plant’ 1937

I think this is supposed to be a hyper cropped section of an ice plant. That is not how I like to think of this work.

I’m drawn to this painting because of how my mind makes me want to contextualize it and there is not enough info to fully do this.

To me this ‘contextualization’ my mind is undertaking with a work like this is a lot different than what I do when I look at an abstract expressionist painting.

Juan Gris - 'Le broc', 1920

What I am drawn to in Juan Gris’ Synthetic Cubism work, are the large shapes that also have detailed texture.

Synthetic Cubism is defined as a Shift away from strictly breaking down forms (Analytical Cubism) toward building rich, patterned compositions from flat shapes and symbols.

I often feel like there are two types of ‘abstraction’. This tight formal approach Gris and Crawford are taking and the free flowing Abstract Expressionists.

Installation view of “City Landscape” by Joan Mitchell, 1955

I have never been fully able to appreciate a raw abstract expressionist work like this.

(I included a video that I admire at the end of this. The video talks about how critics approach a painting like this).

I think of works like this as being artifacts of a person who is puking out raw emotion in an unfiltered and lawless manner.

Detail of distressed wall in Italian Villa

I don’t think of a work like what I am showing with Mitchell is much different than this wall of an Italian villa.

  • Villa Wall: Someone scraped the wall to get to this level of… This person did so without the intent of creating an art work, they have created something beautiful and made 10000s of decisions regarding how they would leave the final marks you see.

    • Mitchell Painting: What you are getting from the painting artifact is a conceptual layer missing from the wall alone. With the painting you are also getting Mitchells emotional detritus spewed across her canvas in a beautiful manner… I don’t think it goes much deeper than that.

End of Session 12

Right now I am thinking about both the large shapes you see in a Gris and the mark making you see in Mitchell while trying to keep true to Marden’s discovery approach.

I’m fascinated by this video.

Victor Servranckx 'Opus 3 - Oondulation Corporelle', 1922,

NOTE: Talk about how this is different than abstract expressionism.

This painting by Servranckx is an example of…
