Study Based on Approaching Storm

This is a piece I did primarily in response to my great admiration of Edward Mitchell Bannister’s painting ‘The Approaching Storm’.

What I appreciate in Bannister’s painting most are the mood and composition. For me, this painting conveys a cinematic experience. I look at the work and see a moment of a larger story unfolding which is 100% what I was exploring. I have come back and looked at this painting so many times.

Craftsmanship:

I like this one… I think I learned a bit about the trees on the horizon line, the stromy skies and depth of space.

I think I kicked up the application of pencil on this one and its a bit thicker and more worked than what I was doing a year or two earlier.

Concept:

I love the painting by Bannister. For me its a perfect picture. I wanted to make a study of it to find what I could learn from it.
