Deep Purple, Pencil on Paper 2015
This piece came after a series of plane images I made for the ‘'The End’ series. Unlike those earlier works, which relied on reference, this one was drawn entirely from imagination.
I’m interested in that tension. I’m wanting to render something convincingly without looking at it. The result sits somewhere between observation and invention. The same dynamic shows up in the Sculptor drawing.
Formally, the piece is driven by composition, mark-making, and process. It’s largely tonal, (the white of the plane against the black of the landscape), but there’s more color embedded in it than initially reads. The marks are looser, less resolved, and more expressionistic than in the earlier plane studies.
