Appreciate the raw qualities in this work by Xiaodong. he has some really good works worth looking at.
Appreciate the odd composition and the weird-ass text around the figure.

Édouard Manet 'Plum Brandy', 1877
Love Manet. This isn’t my favorite work by him. But you acn see he is exploring composition, color, and mark making in a sophisticated manner here.
I have no proof, but to me it looks like Manet would have painted this based on a photo. This is not a bad thing. I think its interesting. I think Manet and Degas and other impressionists would have been the first generation with this new tool.
