Inspiration:
Joan Didion
I’ve been slowly listening to Didion’s writings while working.
This image is perfect in many ways (light, how Didion was captured, composition). The goal of these ‘Etude’s is to take an image and transform it into something new. This felt like a good photo to start with.

I have been thinking about this painting by Mimi Gross.

This is not the best quality photo…
At this point, I was happy with everything about this picture except for the ‘depth’ of color and mark making. I like the color, the weird figure, the funky text, the level of detail…
Next step is to push the ‘depth’ and then come back here.
Henri Matisse “Femme au chapeau fleuri” 1923
I appreciate Matisse’s spatial depth in this painting.
End of Session Twenty-three
I’m liking where this one is ending up. It’s not Didion any more in my mind. It does look a lot like the initial photo reference, but if you were to overlay one on top of the other, this painting is a lot different.
I feel like this work successfully iterated towards an open end goal in an unexpected manner, which is good and the point of this exercise.
