Etude #31
Inspiration
While looking for source material, I came across this image.
I thought that the colors in this picture, the texture of her sweater, and the unusual look on her face were thought provoking.
I also thought that it might be a good vehicle to think about a series of iconic images that Brian Calvin created.
Brian Calvin - Button Up
I have been wanting to ‘respond’ to Brian Calvin since I first came across his artwork in the now defunct Juxtapoz website around 10 years ago.
I think I at first dismissed Calvin’s work because it skates so far into illustration. The image however stuck with me.

By this point I was feeling very frustrated. I did not want a photorealist portrait. I was not finding a good place.

This feels so much better to me. Its no longer the young lady in the photo. Now it is someone unique.
I like where this is going. If I am going to ‘respond’ to Brian Calvin, I don’t want to do it with a crappy painting.
