Etude #47
Objective:
Goal: The focus at the start of this painting was to use mixed media (pen, ink, watercolor, and pencil) to create a composition based on a found photograph. With the image in hand, I could concentrate on color, mark-making, and developing a psychological dimension to the image.
Inspiration:
A couple of the artists I was thinking about were Nagel and
Patrick Nagel
For those that are too young… Nagel had a moment. In the late 80s, his art was EVERYWHERE.
I remember seeing prints of his all over the place… then he was gone.
I was thinking about Nagel as I worked on this piece.

I don’t think that Schiele had enough time to fully develop his craft.
I’m not a huge fan of most of his work, but when looking at something like this, you can see why Klimt took an active interest in mentoring him.
End of Session 6
I have mixed feelings about this piece at this point. It feels stuck.
I like the lines and the feeling that she is being disintegrated by the sun.
End of Session Fourteen
I feel like I have fully killed this work. It feels dead and beyond recovery.
I’m going to let it sit for a while.
Reviewing the End of Stage 2
I keep coming back to this point. There are some marks here that I really like.
There is a printmaker, I forget their name, who used to throw his printing plates out of his window to the street a couple of floors down. The resulting scratches would be incorporated into his work and kind of fake out those marks I like so much. I’m tempted to run over what I have right now with a car and see what happens.
