Jacek Malczewski (1854–1929, Poland) Portrait of his wife - 1920
What a hat. Looks like a boat.
I like a lot about this. What I focused on here were the colors around the eyes , the green in the grass, and the purple coat. Great contrasts of detail and color.
Malczewski is normally pretty frilly. This is a nice focused work for him in my opinion.
Ubaldo Oppi (1889–1942, Italy) PORTRAIT OF THE WIFE WITH VENICE IN THE BACKGROUND - 1921
There is a lot I like about this work. Oppi does a good job creating an old school portrait of his wife. The artists hand is fully removed (no overt brush marks). The colors on the other hand engage. I’m looking at how it seems like the water and the dress are the same color?
I enjoy looking at works like this by artists who do so much right, while at the same time leaving gaping weaknesses unaddressed.

Unintended but interesting. There is an earlier face that was covered by watercolor. You can still see it. I like the idea of a face inside of a face painting.
I have a strong urge to start a new larger work starting from this point. This time focusing on the inner face? Spirit?
