I was asked recently why I was doing this series of ‘Etudes’, what it meant, what I’m trying to do with it. When I think about it several answers come to mind.
When I look at this piece ‘Etude #54’, I think about facial blindness. I was kind of shocked to hear Chuck Close, an artist who focused his entire life to painting faces, say straight out that he was face blind. By this, he meant that he can’t tell one person from another based on their faces.
I thought about what Chuck Close said and feel like I am very similar. I can identify persons by their physiological twitches and mannerisms, but I can’t for example, look at a person on the street and understand if I know that person or not until I get them talking and their expressions manifest. I don’t get out that often, when I do I seem to run into someone I worked with in the past or know from somewhere. When I see them, I might be able to sense that I know them, but I likely wont be able to..
When I was a kid, I remember thinking there were only around 20 different person ‘types’. I remember thinking that different kids in my class looked like they were close copies of kids in the next class over, that what was setting them apart was…
End of Session 3
I feel really good about this piece right here.
I think I am going to be a horrible person though and keep going with it.
The whole point of this exercise is to push it. See where things go.
