Dix, Otto
Dix had an interesting face
Otto Dix is complex. I’m not an expert on him yet and I’m finding contradictory takes so far. He was defined by WW1. Most of his art is about the gruesomeness of war and I’m not posting any of those images. I just don’t like them. There’s no narrative framing, just bodies, damage, and aftermath. His personal life after the war was extreme (to put it mildly).
Where the work starts to hold my attention is in the portraits.
I like how Dix embraced pushing elements of the faces and bodies to extremes. These extremes created what I consume as being a ‘more authentic’ look at a person.
I look at Dix’s work and feel like he didn’t meet his potential. I’m not showing his more complex work here… I’m not a fan of it (maybe I’ll like it another day).
There is a lot going on with the figures and faces here that I do want to steal.
