Juan de la Rica

I’m just starting on this. Gathering info on de la Rica currently

So far, my take is de la Rica is a good painter who has evolved a hyper finished/polished style. I have been trying to find examples of what the surfaces of his canvases might look like. So far, what I have seen leaves me to believe that these are pretty flat, non-painterly works of art. I’m judging de la Rica a little harshly in my head because I don’t think he is taking as many risks as an artist should be taking. Its pretty obvious that this guy has a reputation he has built with collectors who adore his work. He also has all the talent in the world. I want to see him break out and at least mess with his mark making.

I’m super tempted to make a few works in response to de la Rica… I love his compositions and color. I could learn a lot from him by thinking about his approach for a while.

Crowds:

de la Rica likes to explore crowds of super stylized faces

Posed Females:

Mostly, it seems that de la Rica is getting into painting stylized female figures.

Other:

This is the work I’m actually most drawn to currently. I like the stylized still lifes and the hands are super.

Older Work:

I think its interesting to see how de la Rica has evolved. These works are from around a decade earlier, exploring the same themes as above.
