Tomas Sanchez

I am just discovering the work of Tomas Sanchez. I am getting into the world building he is doing with his artwork. I feel that his work is skirting the line between what is art and what is considered illustration today. There are a few other artists who spent their career’s on the outside of the mainstream art gallery system, (name them)…

For me, when I say someone is an artist or when I say that they are creating ‘artwork’, I mean that they are exploring. I feel like a finished canvas is a map or evidence of thought. When I look at Sanchez’s body of work, I am seeing images that appeal to me, but they are all almost the same. I think that Sanchez has been painting the same pictures for close to 40 years. I don’t think he is taking any risks any more.

I like some of this work a lot. I also am not sure its art.
