Objective:
Goal: Paint a self-portrait
Paul Gauguin - Self-Portrait, 1896
I appreciate Gaugin’s painterly style. This is opposite of my default approach and is something I aspire towards.
I haven’t studied a Gaugin closely in person yet. I assume the paint is thinly applied, creating the transparent glow.
Malcom Turnbull Portrait - 2025?
Jude Rae is exceptionally gifted portrait artist. She has a gift of painting in a manner that I am drawn to. Sort of a buttery Lucian Freud style.
End of Session One
In retrospect, if I had more courage I would have pushed this exaggeration further following the example of Otto Dix.

This is how I look when I’m at my most content, thinking about spatial and color problems while creating a picture.

I almost called it done right here. I was very happy with this piece at this point.
I like the unfinished state. There are aspects of this that were lost in the finished piece. But I’m happy that I kept pushing this forward.

This work came together for me in a good way. I’m super happy with where its ending up.
