Carel Weight
I’m still learning to like Carel Weight. In his work, there are all of the ingredients I admire such as drama, color, mark making, composition. His canvases are often very ambitious and labor intensive. I think part of the reason Weight is not more mainstream is because his works are not the easiest to quickly take in. There are no ‘gestalt’ moments in his paintings that I have seen. Instead I find myself looking at his work for a long time. I feel like Weight’s better work requires an easy chair and a glass of scotch whisky. You enter an internal mental conversation with his paintings.
I do like a few of his works quite a bit such as ‘The Eye’ below. Its strange. I’m not sure what is going on. Some lady is running in terror. Or are all three figures running in terror? What is the dynamic? The paint is applied in a manner that speaks to me of turmoil. Its a very engaging work that I could look at for a while.
