Etude #42
Objective:
Goal: This is one of 3 drawings I started together as part of this ETUDE series. When I started these drawings, I had one egg tempera done and 38 that I was having a hard time pushing over the finish line. My goal was to blow things up for my self a bit.
Result: WIP
Goal: All of the Etude paintings at this point have a few things I strive for: color, expressionistic mark making, and a two fold psychological element.

Psychology, Is there a person looking back at me?
Elizabeth Peyton Nick (Chateau Marmont, Los Angeles, September 2002)
Elizabeth Peyton was able to do so much with her minimal use of mark making.
With just a little she conveyed a sense of a real person and brilliant colors.
Maurice Denis (French, 1870-1943), 'Sur la plage (fillettes à contre-jour)', 1892
A lot of painters used to have a colored background panel or canvas and would then paint a landscape study on top of it. The underlying color would play with the colors on top which creates a good tension/glow.
To me, it looks like Denis did this with this painting. I like the quality of light here. Another artist I’m thinking about is Tom Thomson who approached his work like I described with his studies.

I like a lot about this but I feel like it is missing a ‘depth’ that I still want to strive towards.

I’m starting to like this one too much to dig into it more. In the future, it would be good to push the mark making even more.
